A Call to Improve Our Family Burial Ground

Located in the sleepy town of Parksley, Virginia, an unfenced cemetery sits in need of improvements. It is the final resting place of our Matriarch, Ardola Vicks (Mother Sarah). Also laid to rest, on this sacred ground, are many of our fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins and church family.

Despite the best efforts of family members over the years, the family burial ground has seen its share of neglect and disrespect.

Town folks heap trash on the land; due to it bordering an old garbage-dump site. The grounds are in need of landscaping and year-round maintenance. Names on headstones are fading. Some graves need a headstone.

Prior to the demolition of the Fryar's old home, squatters trespassed on the land and took shelter in the unsafe flat.

This is a call to action! A call to family members to raise the funds to:

  1. install a commercial aluminum fence to keep out trespassers and trash dumpers.

  2. hire a landscaping company to clean up and level the land.

  3. provide year-round landscaping services.

This is a call to show our loved ones the respect and honor they deserve in their final resting place.

Note: A family project is under way to determine the amount needed to address this situation.

More details to come in subsequent posts.

About Me

self portrait 1_inPixio.jpg

I'm just one of the many descendants of Ardola Vicks who believes that our family has unlimited potential. While it's true that many of us live miles apart, we will forever have so much in common - ancestry, beliefs, etc.

Our mission, if we choose to accept it, is to identify and achieve as many common goals as possible. That is the spirit in which this blog was created.
